Commercial Portraits

These are some photos that could be seen in a magazine advertisement for clothing, jewelry, or makeup. They also could be used for a pop culture magazine. They are from the same photo shoot as the artistic portraits but they could be used for both artistic or commercial portraits.
This is photo focuses on the simple dress against the detailed bush to make it pop out. Making the photo a tinted black and white further emphasizes the contrast and also gives it a vintage feeling that would market the style.
This photo emphasizes the makeup and the flower. The vibrant blue contrasts with the orange to bring out her eyes and make the viewer focus on the makeup.
I liked the clearness of this photo in black and white but the real commercial photo is the colored version.
This last photo really focuses on her face and the makeup she is wearing. The colorful vibrance of the makeup brings your eyes to the center  to focus on her face.

Fine Art Portraits

These are some fine art portraits I took of my friend Gaby in the park by my house and in my backyard. I played around with the exposure for many of them and had fun editing the photos to give them a certain mood and backstory.
Gaby is searing through the gap in a tree in my backyard. I love this photo for how creepy it is. The black and white effect made it even more scary and to top it off I enhanced the detail of her face to emphasize her intense expression.

This photo, of Gaby, was taken with a longer exposure so I could capture the movement of her head. This photo has an eery feeling as well, but not as creepy. To edit I changed around the temperature and exposure.
I liked how these two pictures went together. They were taken in the park at night and to get her face to show up I had to change the exposure which then made the photos very grainy. I liked the look so I added more grain and mixed around the colors as well as giving the photos a small vignette.
Gaby is in a flowing bush. Her expression and attire make the photo seem dreamlike and imaginary. I edited the colors and then made the photo black and white with a brownish tint. To enhance her face and hair I used the sharpening tool.

These are portraits of me that Gaby took with my camera at the time and place I took her photos. I edited them in Lightroom and enjoyed the mood so I decided to share them also.

Fine Art Portraits and Commercial Portraits

Fine Art Portrait
Zachary Snellenberger
I like the dreamy surreal feeling Zachary's photos give off. I also like the dull colors and earthy colors in the photos (desaturated). I like the composition; it is nature like and produces a calm feeling. The lighting is not too bright or dark and there isn't much contrast.

Xin Li
I like, again, the dreamy feeling Xin Li has in her photos. I like the calm lonely feeling the photo radiates. This photo has more contrast then Zachary's, but still holds the earthy relaxedness. I like the nature in the composition, but the touch of mystery the blue balloon brings into the picture.
Commercial Portrait
I-D Magazine
I like this cover because it is very pop arty. I like the all the doodles that make the cover look cartoonish and fun. It draws my attention to the mood and potentially what the magazine is about. The drawings emphasize fun which makes me want to read or look inside the cover for more.
Toilet Paper Magazine
I like the surreal feeling of this cover. It is simple but captures my attention because it is forcing me to look deeper to try and understand the message. Because it doesn't give a lot of information about what the magazine is about, I am made to want to open and see what the content is (the purpose of a cover is to draw you in).

Similarities and Differences Between Fine Art and Commercial Portraits
The fine art portraits are made less to get someone's attention and draw them in to make them want to purchase an item or look inside the magazine, but more to capture the viewer in the world of the picture and make them think about the bigger meaning. Fine art portraits are statements about a story behind the subject. Magazine/commercial portraits are making a statement about how great a person or a n object is.

Surrealism and Photomontage

Surrealism is a changed reality in artworks; visions of the unconscious mind. Many surreal artworks have objects that are out of place, or scenery that is unrealistic.
